A courtroom divided. Two families torn apart by tragedy.

20 year old Christopher Smith convicted of shooting his two siblings killing his five year old sister Teela Murphy as she played in a neighbors yard. Three years later he faced a judge one last time.

“It was fair, just and reasonable but it wasn’t good or bad or anything else,” says defense attorney Jim Byrd of Smith’s sentence.

“I would like to have seen him go to prison,” says assistant district attorney Chalea Tisdale. “I would like to have seen him meet some of the people who perpetrate these kind of crimes and understand the true ramifications of killing someone.”

Two years behind bars was more than Teela’s grandmother, Lucy Murphy, expected. “I thought he might remain free but he didn’t.”

Teela’s Dad, Trey Murphy, says he still has to explain to Teela’s brother why they can’t go to heaven and see her. “I was concerned when I got here that he was going to walk free. So we were happy that he got something.”

Before sentencing Smith addressed the court and the families. “The first thing he said was he wanted to tell everybody that he was sorry they were going to miss a wonderful person Teela was going to grow into and become,” says Byrd.

His words didn’t mean much to a grandmother and father still grieving their loss. “I didn’t believe anything he had to say,” says Lucy Murphy.

“I heard him say that he was also a victim,” says Trey Murphy. “I heard him say that only him and God knew what really happened and that was kind of the problem.”

Smith was taken into custody immediately after the judge passed sentence. “To see him be put in handcuffs and be taken away was a sense of relief for me,” says Lucy Murphy.

Smith will serve his two years in the Baldwin County Community Corrections program. Once he has completed that he will remain on supervised probation for three years.
