GULF SHORES, Alabama –There’s no way to hurricane-proof an entire community, but the city of Gulf Shores is “hurricane ready.”
When Ivan made landfall in 2004 as a Category 3 hurricane, countless homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed.
Before Ivan, structures only had to withstand 100 mile per hour winds. In 2012, the city required new buildings to withstand 140 mile per hour winds.
Now, the city’s building code requires all new structures to withstand 160 mph winds.
The city also requires builders to use stronger roofing materials and debris impact resistant windows.
