A popular Birmingham attraction is gaining international attention.
Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum is named the best Alabama attraction by USA Today.
A panel of Alabama-based travel experts nominated 20 places for the chance at becoming Alabama’s Best Attraction. The top 10 were selected by popular vote.
More than 260,000 passed through the Barber Motorsports Museum last year.
The museum is known for its collection of vintage Lotus race cars and more than 1,400 motorcycles.
Over the course of the past decade, the museum has attracted people from all over the world to Alabama.
“We found that early on in opening the museum unfortunately we were better known in Europe as the world’s largest monocycle collection than we are right here in Birmingham Alabama, so we’re kind of proud to see that Birmingham is being recognized,” said Executive Director Jeff Ray.
The city of Birmingham is currently looking to relocate the Southern Museum of Flight, which is currently near the airport, to just down the road from the Barber Motorsports Museum.
Councilor Hunter Williams says there’s a benefit to having attractions located in one centralized area.
“It really doesn’t have a ton of visitorship and putting it right next to an institution that has the most visitorship than any other place in the state of Alabama with over 260,000 people coming in and so what this is going to allow us is really going to allow the southern Museum of Flight to take off, forgive the pun,” said Williams.
