Robertsdale Flag display removed ahead of Alberto

Robertsdale, AL (WKRG) - A massive project on the campus of Robertsdale High School was packed up ahead of the incoming tropical weather.  Saturday morning cadets from the Navy Junior ROTC took down more than 5,000 American flags on the front lawn of Robertsdale High School.  They were up to honor America's war dead from the Korean War.  In a statement from the organizer, Chief Petty Officer Edward Theodoro writes in part:

WITH THE APPROACHING TROPICAL WEATHER, WE HAVE MADE THE DIFFICULT DECISION TO BE PROACTIVE, RATHER THAN REACTIVE.  WE SIMPLY CANNOT RISK HAVING OUR COMMEMORATION DESTROYED BY TROPICAL WINDS AND RAIN.

THEREFORE, WITH THE GREATEST RESPECT TOWARDS OUR FLAG AND FALLEN SERVICE MEMBERS, WE DECIDED TO RETIRE OUR COMMEMORATION ON OUR TERMS, NOT TROPICAL STORM ALBERTO'S.--Edward Theodoro via Facebook

This was the first year for "Operation Patriot59."  The project is meant to honor Memorial Day and the lives America lost in various conflicts through history.
