Alabama is the only state in the country to be using this new tool to prevent tax fraud–and it’s as easy as taking a selfie.
It’s called Alabama e-ID. Taxpayers can download a free app that includes instructions for taking a selfie suitable for facial recognition. That photo is then cross-referenced with your Alabama drivers license picture, already on file with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
The idea is to make sure you are you and not some troll out to steal your tax refund.
Kathleen Abrams with the Department of Revenue says even if you aren’t ready to file your tax return yet, you can still use the free app now so that the department can verify you as the real taxpayer.
Once you are verified and a tax return is filed, you’ll get notification where you can say, ‘Yes, I filed that return,’ or ‘No, I didn’t.’
It’s hoped the new program will help cut down on the number of people ripped off by thieves filing false tax returns. Alabama e-ID is free and available at the Apple App Store or Google Play.
