DAPHNE, Ala. (WKRG) — Local students are almost out of school for their winter break. Typically the last few days are largely reserved for Christmas parties.
However, one group of fourth graders decided they wanted to give theirs up to instead celebrate with a World War II veteran.
Students in Mrs. Singley’s class at Daphne East Elementary developed a special friendship with Frederick Ellis after he attended their Veteran’s day assembly.
When they found out his 95th birthday was this week, the children gave up their party for an impromptu birthday party.
“He served for us and the least we could do was give him a birthday party,” said Willaim Meadows, a student in the class.
The children pitched in to give him gifts and a cake.
“I just enjoy being with youngsters,” said Ellis. “I can’t believe it all. I’m overwhelmed with it.”
Ellis served in the Army as a B-29 mechanic. His actual birthday is December 17.
