On Tuesday (June 19, 2018) a one-year-old American girl received a cochlear implant which enabled her to hear for the first time.
Footage filmed just as the device was activated shows the moment little Ayla smiles as she hears sounds for the first time, whilst her parents can be seen overwhelmed with emotion.
Mother Anne Esler, who had Ayla on her lap during the hearing test said at a question and answer session with ‘Cook Children’s Health Care System’.
“When I saw her responding to sound I was overwhelmed by thankfulness to God and to everyone else who has been a part of this journey.”
”She still has challenges ahead of her-we have a year’s worth of catch up to play, and whereas most kids learn to hear naturally we will actually have to teach her to hear, to teach her that sound has meaning” Esker said.
The cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic device that aids patients who are deaf or that struggle with hearing.
