VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) —
Commanding Officer Chad Vincelette gave an update to a shooting that happened Friday morning. He states around 6:45 a.m. a male sailor shot a female sailor several times. The female was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The alleged shooter and victim have not yet been identified.
Commanding Officer Vincelette says the shooter was quickly identified and was shot and killed by Naval Air Station Oceana personnel. He says the shooter was armed with a single handgun and was not carrying any additional weapons.
Officials say a shooter has been contained after one person was injured in an active shooter incident Friday morning at Naval Air Station Oceana.
Oceana officials said in a tweet the person shot was taken to a hospital, but their condition was not immediately known. The base is currently on lockdown.
NBC News reported citing a U.S. Military official the shooting involved a domestic disturbance in the base’s parking lot. One person was shot before the shooter turned the gun on themselves, according to NBC.
A spokesperson with Oceana told 10 On Your Side the public is being asking not to go near the base at this time. The Virginia Beach Fire Department said in a tweet all gates at Oceana are closed.
NAS Oceana is under lockdown. All gates are closed, no base access at this time. There is currently a security situation according to Oceana PAO.
