JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – An alleged carjacker burns to death in Jackson Saturday after stealing a vehicle and crashing it into a gas pump.
The vehicle was reportedly carjacked out of Byram earlier in the day.
The alleged carjacker drove the car into a pump at the Eagle Stop Gas Station on West Capitol Street and Ellis Avenue, police say, when the collision ignited fire and set the vehicle ablaze.
Police say that when they arrived at the scene, along with Jackson firemen, the driver discharged his gun from the burning vehicle, but no one was shot.
“When they arrived, they found a black SUV that had collided with a gas pump and the vehicle was on fire with the driver still inside,” a police release said. “Jackson Fire Department responded to assist, but the driver displayed a handgun and fired several shots into the air which prevented firemen from approaching.”
“The driver never pointed the weapon at anyone and never appeared to make any efforts to exit the vehicle. He subsequently died as a result of the fire.”
The driver can only be identified as a black male, while investigators await additional information to obtain a positive identity, according to authorities.
“Video surveillance at the location showed the black SUV as it turned quickly into the lot, driving directly into the gas pump before bursting into flames,” the press release said.
Only one car was involved in the crash, but two other nearby cars were damaged by the blaze, according to police.
