MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — The mayor of Mobile says the man killed in a shooting Saturday afternoon is a public service worker who served the City of Mobile for more than a decade.
Mayor Sandy Stimpson released the following statement asking for thoughts and prayers for the family, friends, and colleagues of Justin Mooney:
“Today, we lost one of our very own. Justin Mooney was a public service worker who served the City of Mobile and our citizens for more than a decade in special operations. We mourn for his family, friends and colleagues and offer our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. This remains an active murder investigation and more details will be forthcoming from the Mobile Police Department.”
The family of Justin Mooney says he was in the wrong place at the wrong time Saturday when he was fatally shot in his mother’s driveway on Raven Drive.
Justin’s cousin, Kevin Mooney, said, “Helping his mother out as well as taking care of his mom.” Kevin says his cousin walked outside and fell victim to a drive-by. Kevin said, “I think he pretty much came home that day and come to visit his mother and pretty much just out of nowhere something like that happened.”
Kevin says his cousin was caught in the cross-fire. Police say two others were injured in the shooting, but that they are expected to live. Kevin says it wasn’t his cousin but the two others shot who were the targets and “It’s something that shouldn’t have happened.”
Justin died in the driveway of his mother’s house. Kevin said, “It’s just going to take a while for her to come to grips with what’s happened.”
Justin leaves behind his Mom, his siblings, and a young son. Now his whole family is pitching in to fill the void he leaves behind. Kevin said, “His mother is taking it real hard, his sisters, it’s not easy for our family right now.”
Family tell us they plan on having a candlelight vigil for Mooney on Raven Drive Monday night at 7:00 p.m. As of now, police have made no arrests or released any information on the shooter.
