University of Mobile president resigns for “personal” reasons

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Timothy L. Smith has resigned as University of Mobile’s president, according to the school.

The university says the decision was for “personal” reasons.

The following is a news release from the university:

MOBILE, Ala. – University of Mobile’s Board of Trustees has announced the resignation of President Timothy L. Smith, effective immediately. The fourth president of University of Mobile informed the board of his decision on Monday, Feb. 25, citing personal reasons.


Smith has served as president of University of Mobile since April 2016.


“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank Dr. Smith for his service to University of Mobile,” said Board of Trustees Chairman Fred Wilson. “Many significant accomplishments have been made under his tenure, and we are grateful for his leadership. The Board of Trustees is dedicated to continuing the forward momentum of University of Mobile.”


Under Smith’s leadership, University of Mobile significantly enhanced academic programming and added doctoral programs, built a state-of-the-art facility for health and science professions, increased national rankings and grew enrollment.


The Executive Committee and the Board of Trustees are working on finalizing plans for the immediate future of the university and ensuring a smooth transition, Wilson said.
