MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Tolls are coming to the Wallace Tunnel and the Bayway. Allison Gregg with the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project told News 5 there is no way to finance the project without tolls.
While the final cost has not been decided, Gregg says Mobile River Bridge and Bayway is studying a $3-$6 cost for the entire alignment. The entire alignment includes the Wallace Tunnel as well as the current Bayway and the new bridge the project is building. It also means if you use the Wallace Tunnel, but get off at Mid-Bay, you will not pay the full cost. There will be segmented tolls across the Bayway.
Gregg says Mobile River Bridge and Bayway is working on agreements with other states for interoperability, meaning your SunPass would work in Alabama. She added there is more than one way to pay the toll. Drivers can pay through a transponder, like SunPass, or through “pay by plate.” The tolls will be electronic, and there will be no need to stop for them. Gregg also says there will be a frequent user discount for drivers who go back and forth from Baldwin County to Mobile County regularly.
There will also be a free route drivers can take instead of using the toll. Drivers can use the Causeway and the Cochran-Africatown Bridge for free.
Tolls will not start being collected until 2025.
