The US Chamber of Commerce warns a trade war could impact a half million workers in Alabama.
The Nationwide organization is garnering public support to oppose President Trump’s tariffs. More than 3 billion dollars worth of products are exported out of Alabama. Many are exported through the Port of Mobile. In all, 567 thousand Alabamians are employed by foreign trade. One of those industries is steel exporting.
With the threat of tariffs, the European Union, China, Mexico, and Canada have already retaliated with billions of dollars of tariffs on American-made products including steel.
The US Chamber of Commerce states writes more than 2.5 million Americans could be impacted by these tariffs. WKRG has reached out to the Alabama State Port Authority and Congressman Bradley Byrne but have not heard back from either entity as late Friday afternoon.
