MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Jim Nagy was introduced as the new Senior Bowl Executive Director 8 months ago. The former NFL scout has been working hard behind the scenes assembling a roster that should produce over 90 NFL draft picks.
Jim Nagy, “Of all the players we targeted this year, I don’t want to get into any names, there were only 6 seniors that we invited that didn’t come this game, 2 of them are injured, so there’s really only 4 that said, thanks, no thanks.”
Nagy met with the local media Wednesday and shared his thoughts on a number of subjects of how the game has changed over the years, and in recent times, like graduated juniors being able to play, this year’s roster features a record 10 juniors!
Nagy, ” We had to identify them, because we didn’t want to get January and fill our roster with senior and have all these juniors comes out and be like, well they’re great players but we don’t have room for them.”
We are seeing fewer Alabama players in the game and that is because the better players have long gone before their senior year.
“The Alabama thing is getting more difficult because, an unfortunate byproduct of all their success in what Coach Saban has built up there, is they’re losing juniors at high rate, 7 this year is an all-time high, they’re losing a lot of great players we’d love to have in the Senior Bowl early, that is going to create challenges, obviously we always want to have those guys in the game.’
This year’s game has only two Crimson Tide players.
Auburn has three players including quarterback Jarrett Stidham who Nagy loves.
“My opinion is very high of him, I think he has a chance to be a starter at the next level, really excited Jarrett is coming down.”
Throughout the history of the game, local players have been invited in big numbers. In today’s game, only the ones who are true NFL prospects should expect to get the call.
“I want to have local players in the game, like having B.J. Autry and Deshaun Davis in the game is awesome, they deserve it, they’ve earned it. But going back to the theme that this game is for the NFL, we’ve have to bring the best players for this game.”
Nagy’s roster looks great, now the new boss is hoping to energize the community to buy tickets and let’s make the 2019 game a sellout.
“I’ve had that sign hanging upstairs for about a month and half now, I want nothing more that hanging that thing out in front of the office and calling it a day.”
