MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A Mobile native, one of the first Black Marines, will be posthumously recognized for his unit’s Congressional Gold Medal.
Cleveland Jackson was a Master Gunner Sargent in a segregated US Marine Corp unit, the Montfort Point Marines, during World War II. The Montfort Point Marines were awarded a collective Congressional Gold Medal in 2012.
The ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Serenity Funeral Home’s Celebration of Life Center. Doors will be open at 11 a.m. memorabilia from Montford Point Marines as well as uniforms and other artifacts will be featured.
Correction: A previous version of the story reported that Jackson was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal, suggesting it was an individual Congressional Gold Medal. Instead, the entire unit was awarded a collective Congressional Gold Medal.
