MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — City and County leaders have partnered to build a state-of-the-art basketball court off Dr. Martin Luther King Avenue in Mobile.
What is now an empty lot will soon be a positive space for this community. Leaders say this project has been in the works for some time and now they are excited to see it all come together.
“For many years this area has gone without those recreational amenities that many other neighborhoods are a clamor for,” said Councilman Levon Manzie.
It’s a quarter of a million dollar project, one of many new community spaces to come in the heart of MLK Avenue.
“We will start implementing the Tiger grant. It will include MLK Boulevard and it will include us making a bike path along with this trail. So this should be increasing activity here in this very site that we are,” said Mayor Stimpson.
The court will include new basketball goals, bleachers, security lighting and new landscaping features, just to name a few.
Manzie says this is the right start to improving residents quality of life.
“Give them a much-needed place to come here to relax and enjoy some culture right in their own community,” said Manzie.
Manzie says they have no set timeframe, but they hope to have the court ready within the next five to six months.
