MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A man accused of beating and killing a 2-year-old because the child wouldn’t potty train has been released on bond.
Willie Burton was released from Metro Jail around 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
Burton allegedly killed his girlfriend’s toddler, Kye Freeman, in August 2018. An autopsy revealed the boy suffered brain hemorrhaging, a lacerated kidney, and his stomach was separated from his small intestines.
“Kye was innocent. everybody loved him. He smiled and hugged everybody. There wasn’t a bad bone in his body,” Freeman’s godmother Scarlett Rodriguez told News 5 on Thursday.
The boy’s family showed up to court as Burton and his attorney asked a judge to reduce his $250,000 bond, a request the judge denied.
On Friday, Burton was released after the $10,000 cash component of the bond was paid.
Burton is due back in court July 15.
