MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Hundreds of athletes competed in the Mobile Area Special Olympics on Friday. The games were held at St. Paul’s Episcopal School’s track.
About 300 athletes representing 39 schools competed in events like relays, wheelchair races, shot put, long jump, etc.
The athletes trained over the last few weeks. Students who won gold medals will go on to compete in the Alabama Special Olympics in Troy next month.
While a competition, the games are really all about having fun.
“This is not a population of kids that gets all the same opportunities as most people, so we want to do what we can to put on this great event for them and let them come and showcase what they’re able to do,” said Mobile Area Director for the Special Olympics Nick Caddell.
