It’s a tearful goodbye Saturday for Jakory Smith. The young man just turned 15 recently and was staying with relatives at the Carondolet Apartments off Springhill Avenue when he was shot to death early Christmas Eve morning. Family members say he was sleeping and was hit with a bullet not even meant for him. Today, friends, family, and others gather at the Ark of Safety Church to share their memories and be a part of a celebration of life service. Speaking to News 5 Wednesday, Family members describe Jakory as a young man who was destined to make something out of his life. As the 4th of 15 brothers and sisters, they said he was the glue that held this big family together.
“He just kept everyone smiling, he was my encourager, if I did anything he’d always say mama you doing good, he knows having 15 kids is not easy, and he’d always pat me on the back saying mama you’re doing good. He’d say what’s wrong mama, don’t let nothing get to you,” said Jakory’s mother Marie Salter Millerden. They’ve also set up a GoFundMe page to help handle expenses.
Visitation is Saturday morning at 11 and the funeral service is at 1 pm at Ark of Safety Church at 2700 1st Avenue in Mobile.
