MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Friends of the woman killed in a head-on car crash Monday morning are speaking about the sudden and tragic loss. Investigators say Sonya Jones died after Domingo Francisco Marcos caused the accident.
The Director at Living Word Christian Center Kingdom Academy said Sonya Jones had a smile that would light up the hallways. She had just seen Sonya the day before the accident at an open house for the school.
Director of the Academy Voncile Danks said, “We just said goodbye, see you tomorrow, girl, you know, but it was just really devastating. It was shocking.”
Banks did not think Sunday would be the last time she would see her friend and coworker Sonya Jones.
Banks said, “We’re missing her, but we’re trusting and believing God and we’re hanging in there.”
Jones was killed in a head-on car accident Monday morning. Investigators say the driver, Domingo Francisco Marcos is in the country illegally and he tried to run from the accident scene.
Marcos collapsed from his injuries and was arrested.
Banks said, “It was like my heart just dropped you know, it was like a piece been pulled out of it.”
Banks says Jones was passionate about teaching but she was also an amazing mother. She said, “She has a beautiful daughter Amberly that will be graduating this year from Murphy.”
Banks adds Jones was a great teacher and someone who will be very much missed. Banks said, “Our students at school even if she seen one didn’t have a snack, she’s going to make sure she has that. You know, whatever they needed in their class work to their personal beings, whatever.”
Banks said the school plans on honoring Jones by completing a project she wanted to get done. The school plans on decorating the girl’s bathroom to make the students feel more special.
The Mobile County District Attorney’s Office says there will be a bond hearing for Marcos on Friday. The DA will request no bond.
