MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — It’s been chaos on the ground floor of Mobile Government Plaza for the past two days. Two of four elevators to get to the courts are not working.
The situation has been a nightmare for those trying to make their court dates on time. Some people waited over 40 minutes to get onto an elevator.
“It’s making us all late for court, but they saved us,” said Kim Ray. “Someone talked to the people and we’re all safe from being late.”
The situation was particularly frustrating for Destiny Bailey who uses a wheelchair.
“As we were waiting every one of the elevators was full and then we finally got on one elevator and since my chair is so heavy, people kept trying to shove on there and they wanted to get an attitude and get angry because they couldn’t fit because the elevator wouldn’t work and we couldn’t get off,” said Bailey.
The elevators are the only option for people to take to go up to the courts. People can take the stairs down, but the entrance to the stairs is outside the building. For that reason, only people with security clearance can use them.
A representative with the Mobile County Commission says one elevator should be repaired this week, but the other has been broken since April and there is no timeline for when that one will be fixed.
