MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) A man shot by Mobile police after leading officers on a high speed chase was released from the hospital and booked into Mobile Metro Jail overnight.
Cecil James, 40, was booked on an attempted murder charge at 12:51 a.m. on Monday, according to jail records. James is also charged with domestic violence and eluding police.
Captain Paul Burch of the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office confirms the chase started when a Prichard police officer attempted to pull over the suspect. The suspect fired shots at the officer from his car, and the officer returned fire. The chase ended on Wolf Ridge Road and Marchal Lane.
James was shot six times, according to authorities. No officers were hurt in the shootout.
Burch was unable to confirm why the officer initiated the traffic stop but said the vehicle the suspect was driving had an expired tag from 2003.
The FBI and the Mobile Police Department are also assisting in the investigation. FBI agents on the scene assisted Prichard Police as part of an ongoing operation they have within the county called VGRIP, which involves the FBI and other agencies helping to patrol high crime areas.
