A preliminary hearing was held today for Damon Jenkins who is accused of allegedly murdering his roommate in Mr. Vernon earlier this year. The defendant is charged with murder and the case has been turned over to the grand jury.
UPDATE (9:20 a.m.): The Mount Vernon police chief has confirmed that an autopsy revealed that Caster was shot in the head.
UPDATE (6:40 a.m.): The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office confirms Jenkins is charged in connection with the homicide in Mt. Vernon.
ORIGINAL STORY: Damon Jenkins, 42, of Mount Vernon is charged with murder. He was booked shortly before midnight at Mobile Metro Jail, according to jail records.
Authorities have not confirmed whether Jenkins is a suspect in a homicide investigation that began on Tuesday when 43-year-old Latywen Guanchez Caster was found dead inside a closet of his home on Highway 43 in Mount Vernon.
Caster was discovered by his mother, according to police. Caster appeared to have blunt force trauma to his face and head.
The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Mount Vernon Police Department in the investigation.
Authorities said on Tuesday three men were in custody and could face charges.
