MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) – Tuesday will mark 17 years since 9/11. Of the nearly 3,000 people who died, 412 were first responders. More continue to die each year from issues caused by 9/11.

On Friday morning Mobile Memorial Gardens hosted a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony.

The ceremony also honors all first responders in our community.

This year’s ceremony comes just about six months after Mobile Police Officer Justin Billa was killed in the line of duty.

“His wife and family said they did not want his sacrifice to be in vain and so the fact that people remember and continue to acknowledge the sacrifice that he’s made means a tremendous amount to me about the respect this community has for the men and women that serve in this profession,” said Mobile Police Chief Lawrence Battiste.
