An ALDOT spokesman sent an email to News 5:
ALDOT did infact inspect the bridge and concluded there was no significant damage. There will be an engineering assessment later this week to evaluate if any repairs are needed to prevent any future damage to the bridge.–Katelyn Turner ALDOT
Update 3:44 p.m.
The left lane is now open and traffic is moving slowly, according to Alabama State Troopers. The right lane will remain closed until officials can confirm it is safe for traveling. Troopers tell News 5 the 18-wheeler was the only vehicle involved and the driver was the only person inside. The driver is unharmed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Creola Police tells News 5 traffic is closed due to an 18-wheeler that caught fire on I-65 northbound near mile marker 25.
Traffic on the northbound I-65, just north of the General W.K. Wilson Jr. Bridge (Dolly Parton Bridge), is at a standstill due to a possible vehicle fire.
A viewer on the scene says an 18-wheeler is on fire and the driver of the vehicle got out safely. The viewer tells us first responders from Stockton, Rabun and Creola responded to the scene.
News 5 is on the way to the scene and can see smoke on the horizon.
