MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) – Witnesses at Whispering Pines Cemetery say a police chase sped through there on Wednesday.
The cemetery is normally a quiet place where people can come visit the final resting place of their loved ones. But that was disrupted by what witnesses described as a high-speed chase.
It happened after 11:00 Wednesday morning. Witnesses tell News 5 they heard sirens shortly before several Mobile Police cars followed a small white car into the cemetery. They say the person leading the chase was driving about 50 miles an hour down Cheeseman Avenue.
Witnesses say the car stopped at a gate at the back of the burial ground, and the suspect ran into the woods away from police.
A burial was scheduled about 45 minutes after. Only a few mourners and workers were in the cemetery at the time. No one was hurt.
Mobile Police tell us there was a short pursuit that came to an end elsewhere in Prichard but couldn’t confirm it had gone through the cemetery. They tell us at least one person was detained after that pursuit.
A witness sent photos to WKRG showing the police cars and a white car being towed away.
