UPDATE 7:25 am:  Coca-Cola Bottling Company UNITED issues statement on strike.

Birmingham, Ala. (August 9, 2018) Despite Coca-Cola UNITED’s good faith effort to negotiate a new labor contract, Teamsters Local 991 leaders, unwilling to come to an agreement, have called a strike as of today, August 9th.
 
Coca-Cola facilities in Mobile, Leroy, Robertsdale (AL) and Ocean Springs, (MS) continue to operate.
 
Coca-Cola UNITED has activated a business continuity plan to assure customers continue to receive the product delivery and service they expect.

UPDATE: 6:10 am: According to the union president, employees are striking over wages. The plant has been bought out by another company, who has asked employees to take a pay cut. 

UPDATE: 5:45 am: Coca-Cola employees in Robertsdale say workers in all four local factories are striking this morning. Employees have been striking since 2:30 this morning. We have a crew headed to the scene to speak to employees. 

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — News 5 received anonymous tips about a possible strike from Coca-Cola employees that would affect Mobile, Ocean Springs, Robertsdale, and Leroy.

According to Jim Gookins, Principal Officer with Teamsters Local 991, an agreement with Coca-Cola expired on July 15th and the company(Coca-Cola) presented a new proposal to the union.

Gookins tells News 5, “the first offer was rejected by the members on Saturday, July 14th with an authorization to strike. The Parties agreed to an extension through August 5th and resumed negotiations through July 31st. The Company at that time presented another proposal to be voted on. On Saturday 8/4th the proposal was rejected by the members with another authorization to strike.” 

Gookins confirmed to News 5 that Coca-Cola United and the union will meet with a federal mediator sometime Monday in hopes of meeting an agreement. If an agreement is not made, employees may strike. 

Details of the proposed agreements have not been released to the media. However, anonymous tips have told us the conflict is about fair wages.
