The Citgo Quik Mart on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Columbus, Ga. experienced a gas tank explosion as a result of the strong winds from April 14’s severe weather.

The gas station, owned by Mohammad Imtiaz and his wife, sustained structural damage as well as some damage as a result of the fire from the gas tank exploding.

“It was very scary,” Citgo owner Mohammad Imtiaz, “it was like the whole building was shaking like crazy, it felt like the whole building was going to slide away.”

Soon after the wind started, there was a “big fire, a boom,” and the canopy started to collapse, said Imtiaz. He shut down the pumps to prevent the fire from spreading to the other tanks and called the fire department.

Emergency responders arrived minutes after his call.

“I was a little scared, I was thinking if the fire was going to go off, if it explodes, it’s going to be a big mess. It was very scary,” said Imtiaz.
