MHP: Man killed outside Harrison County courthouse pulled knife out on deputy

UPDATE: (3:10 p.m. 1/20/21): The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations has identified the man who was shot and killed outside of the Harrison County Courthouse on Jan. 15.

Investigators say as a deputy approached Reginald M. Johnson, he pulled a knife out. The deputy then shot Johnson. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Here is the statement from Mississippi Highway Patrol:

At the Harrison County Sheriff Department’s request, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting of a male subject which occurred on Friday, January 15, 2021, in Harrison County. A deputy with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department received information of a disturbance taking place outside the Harrison County Courthouse on Lameuse Street. The deputy made contact with Reginald M. Johnson, 48, who displayed a knife and began to advance on the deputy. The deputy discharged his service weapon striking Johnson who was pronounced dead on scene. The deputy sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released. MBI Special Agents, assisted by the MBI Crime Scene Unit, are gathering evidence as part of this ongoing investigation and will share their findings with the local District Attorney’s office. The findings herein are subject to change as this investigation continues. MBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents.

At the Harrison County Sheriff Department’s request, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting of a male subject which occurred on Friday, January 15, 2021, in Harrison County. MBI Special Agents, assisted by the MBI Crime Scene Unit, are gathering
evidence as part of this ongoing investigation and will share their findings with the local District Attorney’s office. MBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents.

BILOXI, Ms. (WKRG) — According to WLOX, officials confirmed there was a fatal shooting at the Harrison County Courthouse involving a deputy.

The courthouse is currently on lockdown say officials.

WLOX reporters and viewers allege the shooting happened outside the courthouse in the parking lot.

Information was confirmed through the Harrison County Coroner, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and other agencies.
