Multiple carjackings lead to officer-involved shooting near Atmore

UPDATE (1:49 PM) — Sheriff Heath Jackson with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama has released an official account of the officer-involved shooting.

On January 8, 2021, Officers with the Poarch Creek Tribal Police made contact with a carjacking suspect at the Creek Travel Plaza located at 4740 Jack Springs Road in Atmore, Alabama. The suspect is alleged to have committed numerous car thefts and armed car jacking’s that spanned over multiple counties in Alabama. After being approached by uniformed officers and marked patrol vehicles, an altercation ensued forcing officers to discharge their firearms. The suspect was injured and transported by EMS to the hospital for treatment. All officers involved managed to avoid injury and we are thankful for their professional and quick response to such a dangerous situation.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) was requested to conduct the investigation as is standard practice with officer-involved shootings that take place in Escambia County, Alabama. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office will refer any other questions to ALEA for comment.

UPDATE (11:52 AM) — Officials say the officer-involved shooting near Atmore was linked to multiple carjackings across the state.

ATMORE, Ala. (WKRG) — The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is assisting the Escambia Co (AL) Sheriff’s Office in an investigation of an officer-involved shooting involving the Poarch Tribal Police at the Creek Travel Plaza gas station Friday morning.

ALEA troopers confirm one person was injured and transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. None of the officers were injured.

Troopers say nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing. Once complete, findings will be turned over to the Escambia County District Attorney’s Office.
