New list of accused priests includes some who served at Spring Hill College

Local News

MOBILE, Ala (WKRG) — Several Jesuits with previous ties to Spring Hill College have been linked to credible allegations of sexual abuse of a minor.

The Jesuits U.S. Central and Southern Province released the list on Friday, one day after the Archdiocese of Mobile released a similar list. Nine total were assigned to Mobile, one was assigned to St. Ignatius.

Eight men with previous ties to Spring Hill College are on the list:

  • Vincent R. Malatesta, SJ
  • Elmo J. Rogero, SJ
  • Claude P. Boudreaux, SJ
  • Charles G. Coyle, SJ
  • Edward D. DeRussy, SJ
  • Austin N. Park, SJ
  • J. Donald Pearce, SJ
  • Claude L. Ory, SJ (Brother)

In a statement, Spring Hill College says it “has no knowledge that the alleged abuse occurred during their assignment to our campus community.”

The ninth man, assigned to St. Ignatius, has been identified as Norman J. Rogge, SJ.

News 5 has reached out to St. Ignatius for comment, their priest is out for surgery.

STATEMENT FROM SPRING HILL COLLEGE

We are aware of the list posted on the website for the Jesuits Central and Southern Province of men who have served the Province with credible allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. Men’s names are included on this list if there is a credible allegation against them, including some who served Spring Hill College in their assignments. Their inclusion does not necessarily mean they were found guilty of any charge of sexual abuse against a minor. It should also be noted that Spring Hill College has no knowledge that the alleged abuse occurred during their assignment to our campus community. Also, the Province has stated that no Jesuit with a credible accusation is currently serving in public ministry.

Our Spring Hill community continues to pray that God may provide healing and peace for all affected and we remain steadfast in our commitment to provide comfort and support.

UNEDITED PRESS RELEASE

Dec. 7, 2018 – The Jesuits U.S. Central and Southern Province today released a list of names of Jesuits with credible allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. This list contains the names of the Jesuits who are or were members of the U.S. Central and Southern (UCS) Province and its predecessor entities: the New Orleans Province, the Missouri Province, or the Independent Region of Puerto Rico of the Society of Jesus.

These men fall into one of three categories:

  • Jesuits of this province against whom one or more credible claims of sexual abuse of a minor or a vulnerable adult have been made;
  • Jesuits from other provinces against whom there are credible claims resulting from their work while assigned to this province;
  • Jesuits of this province whose names have been published on diocesan websites or the websites of other Jesuit provinces.

Inclusion on this list does not imply that the allegations are true and correct or that the accused individual has been found guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims.

Additional information about each man follows the initial list. While a list of each man’s assignments is included, it is important to note that the allegations do not necessarily stem from any of the listed assignments.
