Mobile, Ala. — The giant reels of film will soon be history at the Mobile Exploreum’s IMAX Theater. The museum announced the domed theater will undergo a major renovation thanks to a partnership with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.
In a press release, the Exploreum’s Don Comeaux said just about everything will be changed, including the projection system, which for years has been film based. New digital projection will allow the theater to include live video conferencing as well as live streams from entities like Nasa or Ted Talks. It will also greatly expand the types of movies the theater is able to show since more and more IMAX productions are digital. Comeaux says the theater will be able to project ‘stunning images superior to any previous technology.
The domed theater itself will also get an upgrade with a state of the art sound system to go along with the enhanced visuals. There will be upgraded seating, new flooring, and lighting as well.
Comeaux said they are still in the planning stages on when construction will begin and when the new renovations will be completed. That announcement could come within the next thirty days.
