Escape of convicted killer prompts warning about picking up strangers

UPDATE Saturday, July 7th, 2018

Michael Floyd Wilson has been captured and arrested, according to CBS affiliate WLOX. They report he was taken into custody around 6 p.m.  WLOX states Wilson was caught without incident.

Original Story

An escaped murderer traveled more than 70 miles in less than six hours by convincing strangers to give him a ride.

Michael “Pretty Boy Floyd” Wilson escaped from the South Mississippi Correctional Institution Thursday. He was seen at the Lucedale Walmart a few hours later. He was last seen at the Chevron on Highway 57 in Jackson County.

Deputies were combing the area by air and by foot looking for Wilson Friday morning.

His escape is now prompting a warning from authorities to be cautious about giving rides to strangers. In this case several people gave Wilson a ride not knowing they were helping a convicted killer escape from prison.

“I’m surprised he didn’t try to harm any of them that picked him up,” said Blanca Parker.

Many people we spoke with Friday said they don’t give rides to strangers because there is no knowing who that person really is.

“I think it’s a foolish mistake anymore,” said Al Sperduto. “You don’t know who is out there and who you can trust.”

Authorities are still searching for Wilson. If you see him, you should call 911 immediately.
