MONTGOMERY, AL (WIAT) — Many of Alabama’s state offices were closed Monday because of the Confederate Memorial Day.

This is just one of three Confederate holidays Alabama celebrates, the others are Robert E. Lee Day and Jefferson Davis’ birthday.

Monday, dozens met at the state capitol building near a statue dedicated to Confederate soldiers, to celebrate Confederate history.

This happens to be a very controversial holiday in the state. The founder of the local group Project Say Something, says confederate holidays are divisive.  Tonight on WKRG News5 at 6 we’ll have the reaction from people on both sides of this debate.
