MOBILE, Ala. (WIAT) — A Mobile family has been awarded $12 million in a lawsuit against Mobile’s Pine Crest Funeral Home for losing the cremated remains of a family member and other violations.

The jury voted on the verdict in late February after a trial that lasted several days in Mobile County Circuit Court. Evidence was provided that the funeral home failed to follow the law and their own requirements. Pine Crest was also unable to find and provide the cremated remains of the family member.

“This case is about a funeral home’s failure to respect and honor the dignity of a family member’s life,” the family’s attorney Donald Knowlton said.

Pine Crest Funeral Home is owned by Service Corporation International (SCI), a leading provider of death care services and products in North America.  SCI has approximately 24,000 employees and operates more than 2,000 funeral homes and cemeteries.

The family was represented by attorneys Donald Knowlton and Mike Roberts from the Cusimano, Roberts & Mills firm of Gadsden, Ala. and attorney Jeff Hester of Pelham, Ala.
