Deputies with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office arrested and charged a man with murder after he confessed to killing a person and burying them in the woods behind his house.

The sheriff’s office received a tip about a possible murder that happened two months ago. In investigating the tip, deputies went to a residence on Road 9095 in Valley Head. Investigators talked to 22-year-old Marcus Gordon Ricketts who confessed to the murder.

Authorities are still waiting for the Alabama Department of Forensic Science to identify the body.

The person had been missing since May and a missing person’s report was filed, according to Sheriff Jimmy Harris. He says the information they received revealed that the person may have been stabbed or struck with a blunt object.

“We received information that this person had been possibly stabbed or struck with a blunt object, stuffed in a 55-gallon drum that was sealed at both ends and poured with loose concrete,” Sheriff Harris said. “It only took a short amount of time to locate the barrel.”

This investigation is still ongoing.
