BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — New surveillance video has surfaced after a deadly shooting took the life of a Birmingham Police Officer, wounding another early Sunday morning.
Chase Bays Automotive Studio’s surveillance camera caught sidewalk video as police officers reached the scene of where Sergeant Wytasha Carter was shot and killed, and another officer was wounded.
Carter and another officer were investigating car burglaries just before 2 a.m. Sunday on the 900 block of 5th Avenue North just before the shooting. In the process, they came across two suspects. According to a news release, when the officers approached the suspects, “one suspect produced a weapon and began to fire at the officers.”
Since the shooting, the city of Birmingham and surrounding communities have expressed their deepest condolences for Sgt. Carter, as well as the Birmingham Police Department. A candlelight vigil was held for the fallen officer Wednesday and community members and other fellow police officers were in attendance.
