Golden Apple winner makes reading the priority

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) -- This week's Golden Apple Award winner has seen her students make great strides in one core subject.

When we stopped by Lauren Reid's third-grade class at Holloway Elementary School in Mobile, she was teaching math. But, her students have also dramatically improved in reading.

And it's only Lauren's second year as a teacher.  Last year, her third graders stayed on top of the accelerated reading program in all four quarters.

She was nominated for the award by her Mom, Michelle Reid.

"She's a new teacher but reading is important--she wants them to excel," said Michelle.

These days, keeping a book in the hands of young people is a challenge. But Lauren's unique approach is inspiring, and it's paying off.

"I give them little things to inspire them to read like my reading nook over here," said Lauren.

"It's just something fun for them to go in and sit and read."

But Lauren doesn't stop inside the classroom. This year she started a dance team for 4th and 5th graders. That comes on the heels of the cheerleading team she started last year.

Our congratulations to Lauren Reid and Holloway Elementary for a job well done.
