Summerdale, Ala. (WKRG) — Scott Vernon with Life Riders Motorcycle Ministries joins us to talk about their upcoming ride on March 23rd, 2019. We spoke with members of the organization just a few days ago in a What’s Working segment. Here’s a look at our Sunday conversation:
Chad: How did LIFE Riders get started?
Guest: June 10th, 2012 thirteen of us were on a motorcycle trip in Tennessee and North Carolina. We were on the longest, straightest road in Tennessee and a car crossed the center line and hit two of the group and one other wrecked. It was a bad situation. One of our guys lost a leg and the other two were hurt pretty badly but it is a miracle we weren’t all killed. Sam Wooley, LIFE Riders current President lost his left leg and had some other injuries as well. As everyone began to heal physically and emotionally we began to realize how Blessed we were to survive and felt like God wanted us to turn something that, on the surface, seems like a tragedy into a Triumph for His glory. So now started the process to form what is now LIFE Riders Motorcycle Ministries. If you go to our web site www.liferidersmm.com there is a short video with us all telling the story. It is a powerful example of how God turned a really bad situation into something ultimately for our good and His glory.
Chad: This coming Saturday is the Restoration Ride 2019, where and when is that happening?
Guest: Registration starts at 9:30 AM at the battleship. We will leave promptly at 11 AM and be escorted through the back roads of Baldwin County. We will end the ride at the Youth-Reach Gulf Coast campus in Summerdale. We are giving away over $4000.00 worth of high-end door prizes, there will be music and food. Included in the ride fee will be shrimp, corn, potatoes and sausage dogs if you don’t eat seafood.
Chad: What does it raise money for?
Guest: Youth-Reach Gulf Coast. Youth-Reach is a non-profit Christ-centered home set on beautiful 81-acre campus east of Summerdale, Alabama. The program is designed to remold the values and turn around the lives of at-risk young men, ages 18-22. Residents and their families are never charged for the services offered and since change doesn’t occur automatically within a prescribed period of time, there are no limits on how long a resident can stay in the program.
Chad: How much do you hope to raise?
Guest: Response, We set a goal early in the planning process but agreed not to share it. It is a very big goal, almost double what we have raised in the previous rides. We know without God showing up and blessing our efforts we, on our own, will never reach the goal. We bought a 2009 Harley Davidson and sold 300 raffle tickets with all the proceeds going to Youth Reach, we have businesses & local churches that partner with us through different sponsor levels and of course the bikers pay an entry fee of $25.00 & $35.00 if they have a passenger. So I guess we will just have to wait and see.
Chad: Talk to me about Life Rider, who is this ministry meant to reach?
Guest: Before I got saved in 1998, I was a good husband, a good Dad, a great friend to have and an honest businessman. I just didn’t know Jesus. There a bunch of men and women riding bikes out there that are the same way. Our mission is to reach out to bikers that are looking for something they don’t even realize they don’t have. One thing we all share is a love and passion of riding motorcycles, it’s a brotherhood like nothing I have ever been a part of. When a guy goes down and especially if he is spending some time in a hospital, we want to know about it. We want to go pray with them and encourage them because we have been there and we know what it means to have people show you love and support.
Chad: Who can participate in the Ride Saturday? If you have a motorcycle and a heart to help make a difference in someone’s life both now and for eternity come to join us. There is nowhere you can spend $25 and have the opportunity to do that AND get fed and have the opportunity to win some pretty amazing door prizes.
You can pre-register by going to our web site www.liferidersmm.com. The first 50 will get an event t-shirt.
