GULF SHORES, Ala. (WKRG) — The nets are up, and the competition is going down. The biggest weekend in NCAA volleyball is taking place right in Alabama’s very own Gulf Shores.
Eight teams are vying for the championship slot: USC, UCLA, Florida State, LSU, Stetson, Pepperdine, Cal Poly and Hawaii.
The games will be broadcast across various ESPN networks. This is the city’s second year of a five-year hosting contract with the NCAA and ESPN.
City officials say about 3,000 people are expected to watch the tournament each day.
Meanwhile, the third-largest juniors volleyball tournament is also taking place at Gulf Shores Beach this weekend. That USA Volleyball event will host about 450 youth teams.
The high school state track championships are happening further inland as well.
Officials say the weekend is a huge boost to the local economy.
