ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WKRG) — Doctors upgraded the diagnosis for 5-year-old Annadelle Faulkner’s rare illness. According to her parents, she has now been diagnosed with the polio-like acute flaccid myelitis or AFM.
The condition hits the nervous system and can go so far as to cause paralysis. The Alabama Department of Public Health has not confirmed her case yet, but according to what the CDC told Faulkner’s doctors, she’s the first to receive the AFM diagnosis in the state.
Faulkner’s original diagnosis was transverse myelitis, which is similar to AFM, but less severe.
Faulkner’s doctors expect her to make a full recovery, but it will be a long road.
