FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WKRG) — It’s a different way to get to school.  They’re doing it the old-fashioned way.  Tuesday morning we tagged along with Fairhope’s Walking School bus.  Even with temperatures in the 40’s this morning they still had more than 50 elementary school kids walking more than a half mile to school this morning.  Instead of riding the bus, or sitting in the carpool line, these kids, along with adult chaperones, are shepherded to school on foot.

“We started this because we recognized that children literally do not walk to school any more that’s what I did growing up and it’s pretty much disappeared from life.  Even if there are safe sidewalks parents are fearful for their kids to walk to school so we said without a very safe program with checks and balances kids wouldn’t be walking to school anymore,” said Walking School Bus Director Charlene Lee.   Organizers say this is Alabama’s only daily walking school bus.  They say it promotes exercise and play for the kids.  For more information on the Fairhope Program and how to start a walking school bus where you live check out their website.
