ELBERTA, Ala. (WKRG) — After a new hemp dispensary in Elberta began to raise eyebrows, the owner of Seedless Green on Highway 98 wanted to address concerns with the public. Christian Butts did so at a Town Hall meeting Tuesday night.
It turns out, residents were more concerned about the cannabis leaf on the shop’s sign than they were the sale of hemp products.
“It just threw us,” said Councilwoman Vicky Norris, opening the discussion, and referring to the signage.
Several others spoke up in agreement.
“Seeing a big pot leaf on a sign on a main street does not send the right message,” said an attendee.
Hemp is not marijuana. It comes from the cannabis plant and looks the same, but does not get you high.
That was the main message Butts wanted to get across Wednesday. He also wanted to help reduce the stigma of hemp and CBD products.
“If everyone was willing just to be open to looking at things differently,” he said. “We could help educate everyone.”
Legally, Butts did nothing wrong. His business is legal, and his sign meets the town’s zoning requirements.
