Daphne, Ala. (WKRG) — Even though the Daphne Planning Commission voted to spike a proposed volleyball complex last month, a volley of sorts has begun online.

Supporters of the Tropics Volleyball project say they’re appealing the decision and have started a petition on Change.org.  Supporters say they did their homework and were under the impression the project would move forward in Daphne.

“In the final days leading to the approval date the move became politicized and created a negative reaction of some local residents who we believe miss represented what we stand for and what our mission is,” wrote Weston Hawkins in the online petition.  Opponents have started their own petition as well called “Keep Daphne Wonderful.

“[Volleyball supporters] claim a 8 foot privacy fence will stop sound and lighting from disrupting residents on scenic 98. The property is around 4.5 acres which isn’t that much land, why can’t they build elsewhere? The city council said they do not have a problem with their plan, they just do not want it in that location,” wrote Nathan Parker in the petition.  As of this writing, the supporter’s petition has more than 1,700 online signatures and the opponent’s petition has less than 30 people signed up.
