A Silverhill Police Officer is recovering and two suspects are in custody after shots were fired at a checkpoint in Silverhill Friday.  According to a news release from the BCSO law enforcement officers were conducting a checkpoint at Highway 104 Friday night.  The release says a Toyota Sedan approached the checkpoint and then began to accelerate towards a Silverhill Police Officer who was hit by the vehicle.

The release says the vehicle then accelerated towards another Silverhill Police officer and ALEA Trooper who started shooting at the car before jumping out of the way.  The vehicle led multiple law enforcement agencies on a chase that ended in the Barnwell community when the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a utility pole.  The passenger in the car Shamone Morris was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover from injuries.  The BCSO says Jamie Middleton Jr. was the driver and he’s being charged with second-degree assault and two counts of attempted murder.  The Silverhill Police officer hit by the vehicle was treated and released from a hospital.

Here’s a news release from the Baldwin County Sheriff’s office:

On August 24, 2018, the Silverhill Police Department conducted a safety checkpoint on State Highway 104 in Silverhill, Alabama. During the operation a Toyota sedan, driven by Jamie E. Middleton, Jr., approached officers who were conducting the checkpoint. As a Silverhill Police Officer walked toward the vehicle the passenger, Shamone Morris, began leaning over into the driver’s seat area. As the officer got closer the car’s engine began to race before the Toyota accelerated toward the officer. The officer was struck and received injuries before the suspect sped towards a second Silverhill police officer, and an ALEA Trooper who was assisting. During the incident officers fired their weapons at the suspects as the officers jumped out of the way of the vehicle speeding toward them.

The suspects fled the scene and led law enforcement officers from multiple agencies on a pursuit through Baldwin County. The vehicle pursuit ended when the suspects crashed into a utility pole in the Barnwell Community. Shamone Morris fled from the vehicle after the crash. He was taken into custody a short time later. It was at this time that law enforcement learned that Morris received injuries during the incident. Shamone Morris was transported to a local hospital and is currently being treated for his injuries. He is expected to recover.

Jamie Middleton, Jr. has been charged with Assault in the Second Degree and two counts of Attempted Murder.

The Silverhill Police Officer that was injured during this event was transported to a local hospital. He was treated and released.

The Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit is conducting the investigation relating to this incident. This investigation is in the preliminary stages and it is ongoing. Other details will not be immediately available.
