Stormy weather gave one Gulf Coast beach community a break from the heat. Lifeguards at Pensacola Beach had to clear the sand because of a lightning storm this afternoon.
Beachgoers packed up their things and ran straight for the parking lot.
Island authorities say though the rain comes as a relief in the middle of a heat wave, lightning still poses a threat.
"When you are at the beach you are one of the tallest objects in the sand, so it's very dangerous outside to be in a lightning storm. We recommend everybody seek shelter,"Said Council Vaughn, a lifeguard at Pensacola Beach.
Island officials say if you have to seek shelter in your car, don't forget to roll up your windows.
