WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House says its nominee to run theFederal Emergency Management Agency deserves immediate Senate
confirmation, not "political posturing" from a Republican senator
standing in the way.
President Barack Obama nominated Craig Fugate two
months ago. He is a former chief of emergency management in
Florida, and experienced at handling hurricanes. Hurricane season
begins June 1.
But Louisiana Sen. David Vitter is delaying a vote on the
nomination. Vitter says he has waited more than two months for the
agency to answer his questions about high-risk flood zones.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says Fugate doesn't deserve
"political posturing" from someone who should understand what's
at stake in hurricane response.
