Two weeks ago, Mobile County Emergency Management Agency initiated their new call back program called Connect C-T-Y. Mobile County residents heard a recorded message with information for a tornado watch.
Connect C-T-Y list includes all Mobile County residents with a listed home phone number.
Mike Evans, Director of Plans and Operations with the MCEMA says, "We intend to use it during a tornado warning, we would use it in a haz-mat situation. And there might even be some use during hurricane season. You know obviously Pre-hurricane, sending out messages to people in evacuation areas or potential flood zones."
Communications Officer David Roberts says calling all residents is not a simple task.
"To call all of mobile county, I think we can do it in under an hour. But again that's 400,000 people, that's a lot of phone calls."
Roberts says there is one tool for weather information that everyone should have. "We really do encourage people to use a NOAA Weather Radio for weather events."
Connect C-T-Y is also capable of fine tuning the calling areas. "We can go by zip code, we can call up a map of Mobile County and select a specific area, either by circle or generated polygon. We can call only those phone numbers in that selected area."
So if you get a recorded phone call from the EMA, don't hang up, because the message could save your life.
