Severe weather can happen any time along the Gulf Coast, but November is the most active month for tornadoes! The National Weather Service in Mobile recently finished a study that shows our tornado frequency peak in the spring and fall. The images below illustrate Meteorologist Jeff Medlin's tornado study.

Figure 1 - F1 or greater Tornado Frequency by month for Southwest Alabama, interior
Southeast Mississippi, and extreme Northwest Florida.
Figure 1 depicts all F1 and greater tornadoes occurring in the Mobile Forecast Area from Jan 1994 until March 31 2007. A review of the records shows 59 of them! Tropical cyclone induced tornadoes account for 13.5% of the total number. Outside of those, only two occur during the summer months.

The length of the red line represents the distance traveled, or tornadoes path.
