At the Haven in Fairhope a plan is in place for every puppy and kitten as volunteers pack up supplies into their mobile unit, just in case it's time to go.
Mike Graham with the shelter says animals that don't fit will go to volunteer foster homes. "Most of them have generators built into their home and they still store some of our vaccines that are on ice and some of the animals because they do not evacuate, they stay,"Said Graham.
The Haven holds around 70 animals at a time and whether they're up for adoption or not, if there's a disaster no animal is left behind. "Everyone will be out of the shelter. The shelter will be empty as far as the animals under our care and we'll get them out of harms way and stay out of dodge 10 to 14 days,"Said Graham.
While officials are reminding people to make preparations at home Graham says you shouldn't leave your pets out of your plans.
"Get your pet up to date on it's vaccinations, if you need any calming meds talk to your vet, start researching on the internet pet friendly hotels,"Said Graham.
You are also encouraged to take your pet with you. After Katrina, shelter's like the Haven had a hard time keeping up with abandoned animals. So that's why they're not taking their chances this time around.
If you haven't already done so, take a photo with your pet The Haven says it will make things easier if they get lost. Also a two weeks supply of food, water and identification for your pet are a must. The Mobile SPCA says if they need to, they're prepared to open up a pet friendly shelter at the Boys and Girls Club in Semmes.
